Week 2, Term 3 Tuesday, 28th July, 2009
Chrissy has a sneaky hug with Ceridwen yesterday.
What would we do without them? Clyde School’s wonderful support staff need your support to settle their collective employment agreement. We invite you to sign the pledge poster in the school office this week.
Kia ora,
This week is Maori Language Week, reminding us that New Zealand has two official languages. This years theme is Te Reo i te Hapori, Maori language in the community.
Support staff at Clyde School, as in all New Zealand schools, are valued and respected for their important role. For most of you the first and most regular point of contact with our school is Chrissy in our office. You will appreciate the key role she has in presenting to visitors a great first impression of our school and how multifaceted and often hectic her role is. Many things are done outside her office hours and well beyond her job description. Our teacher aides, Joe, Deb, Carmen and Naomi provide key support for our children’s learning. They too, do well beyond what is expected of them because they are doing it for our kids. These people are entitled to expect fair pay and conditions for the important work that they do in our school. The collective agreement for this group of people has expired and the government is offering no increase to cover the increase in the cost of living - in effect a pay cut. Investing in support staff is investing in the education of our children. Please give them your support.
We welcome back to Clyde School, Jon Morrow, who has returned from Malaysia to finish his Year 8 year with us.
Our Year 3-4 Rippa team, which was runner up in the Central Otago finals last term, had their first practice with Colin Hislop last Thursday to prepare for the Otago Rippa finals starting at 3pm on 7th August at Carisbrook before the Otago vs Southland N.P.C. game. I will send home all the information with team members. Please let Colin or I know if your child is not available to play in Dunedin.
Our Year 7 and 8 pupils received their snow camp information last week and medical and consent forms are due back to school now. Payment of the $80 camp fee must be made to the school before going on camp. You need to contact me before the camp if you would like me to apply to the Otago Community Trust for some financial assistance. Barb Lambeth will be snow camp commander for the whole week and I will join her with the Year 8 group from Wednesday to Friday. Sally Lloyd will teach our Year 7, 8 pupils and Room 2 Year 6 pupils while Barb is up the mountain. It is very important that if a child is unwell they are not sent on camp until they are better. This is especially important this winter with the present concerns about the H1N1 ‘flu. Camp is no place for a sick child so I am asking parents to make what may be a difficult call if you think your child may possibly spread an unpleasant bug to others on camp. Last year our camp was ravaged by sickness. We’d rather not go there again!
P.T.A. funds have recently been used to subsidise our skating programme and $8000 was donated to fund the purchase of one of our interactive whiteboards. As a result there is little left in the PTA coffers to provide support for school programmes. Thank you to the group of parents who assisted with the catering or donated food for the Clyde Earnscleugh Rugby club prize giving on Friday evening. Our new parents are invited to become involved in these PTA activities which make such a difference to the quality of learning experiences we are able to offer your children. The next fundraiser is catering for the Fruitgrowers Golf Tournament.
This afternoon and tomorrow afternoon teachers will be meeting with parents who have indicated they would like to meet with us to discuss their child’s mid term report. We look forward to meeting with you over the next two days.
This years Clyde to Alexandra road race on Saturday 15th August includes road races through the pines near Molyneux Park for 14 and under (4km) and 12 and under (2km). Entry is $2 per runner. Entry forms are available at the school office.
Clyde School’s enrolment scheme was established in 2008 due to roll growth in our area. It requires us to manage our roll to ensure there is no likelihood of overcrowding of our existing school buildings. Children within our zone are able to attend Clyde School as of right and we are from time to time in a position to offer out of zone positions to a limited number of children. With a relatively large number of Year 8 pupils leaving us at the end of the year, we are able to take a limited number of enrolments from outside our specified zone. Please contact me for more information.
I was rather embarrassed last week to inform John Potts from Bikes for Fun that we had lost one of his unicycles! It must be somewhere. We have paid him for a new bike so when it does turn up it will belong to us which will be great for those children who have mastered the art of riding on one wheel. We will be delighted to have the bike returned to school. Please keep an eye out for it.
We are remaining on guard with the ‘flu pandemic by continuing to stress basic hygiene precautions and isolating and ringing parents at the first signs of a child becoming unwell. Luckily we have not yet had a large number of children or staff catch the ‘flu.
Our skating programme got off to a great start last week with all children having lessons in ability groups with their coach Irene and some having the chance to experience the fast and furious game of ice hockey. This week some classes will have a chance to try curling and ice hockey. Rooms 5, 6 and 1 skated today, Rooms 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Rooms 2 and 7 on Thursday. Remember helmets and gloves must be worn on the ice at all times. Thank you to the parents who came along and supported our children on the ice. I saw some great examples of persistence and taking responsible risks which is what learning new skills is all about.
Regards,
Doug White

Are the uniforms standing up to the riggers of every day use? Please specify which articles (if any) of clothing are or are not wearing well.
Is there any item of clothing that may need to be tweaked or modified to better cater for our children’s needs during the school day?
Is there any item of clothing that you would like to see introduced into the uniform to better cater for our children’s needs during the school day?
As a sub-committee of the pTA, we are interested in your opinions on our school uniform. Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas with us.

Week 9, Term 2 Tuesday, 23rd June, 2009
Who needs lycra to go fast? Alistair Banks leads the peleton on the Tour de Clyde Dam last Friday with room one’s cyclists.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Our Clyde underpass may not be too far away! A pedestrian and cycle underpass linking Clyde and the Otago Central Rail Trail has emerged as one of the top two priorities for walking and cycling facilities in the three year Otago Regional Land Transport programme. The Otago Regional Transport committee, who has spent the last seven months working on the programme, will hear in August how many of the Otago projects in the programme will be approved by central government. Clyde School made a submission to Transit N.Z. in support of the underpass and we have actively promoted it out of concern for the walkers and bikers that make the dangerous crossing of Highway 8 at the foot of the Clyde Hill. We are keeping our fingers crossed for some good news in August.
Take a bow Naomi Keenan and the organisers of the Clyde Mid Winter Market! A record number of stalls made this years market the biggest ever. Our year 8 class and Sally and Barb assisted with the market organisation and Naomi said you were fantastic! The Year 8 stall raised funds for their March camp in Dunedin.
Although the swine ‘flu may not be in the headlines and there are no cases yet identified in Otago or Southland, (probably too cold for the little Mexican bugs?), the spread into our area is inevitable. The Ministry of Health has now moved from a containment phase to a management phase which means it is unlikely that schools will be required to close if we have a suspected or confirmed case of H1N1 ‘flu. There is no need for any restrictions on people returning to school after an overseas trip unless they have symptoms. The Ministry of Health suggests that we continue with business as usual with the following precautions.
• Students or staff with ‘flu symptoms should stay at home in line with normal practice.
• Hygiene measures should continue including hand washing before and after eating, keeping hands away from mouths and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing.
• Care should be taken that students who have particular medical conditions or who are susceptible to infection avoid contact with people who have symptoms.
Alistair’s class, room one, thoroughly entertained us with a collection of short plays on Friday which featured some great dramatic performances and had us all in stitches. It made me realise how important it is to have a place in our school where we can invite along and accommodate an audience of our parents for assemblies and the performing arts.
More than ever there is a need to foster creativity in our schools and the arts have a part in promoting innovation and developing a child’s character. Clyde School is presently reviewing its Arts curriculum and we would appreciate your thoughts on our present arts programmes and ideas for further development. Please take the time to complete and return the questionnaire attached to today’s newsletter.
Barb and some hardy members of her class had a ‘polar plunge’ in Lake Dunstan on Friday afternoon to celebrate the winter solstice. I was impressed but not the least bit put out that I wasn’t invited! Look out for a photo in this weeks Mirror.
At the same time Alistair’s class completed a ‘Tour de Clyde Dam’ on their bikes to complete the two classes inquiry study on ‘how things work’.
I always get a kick out of reports from the wider community about how great our Clyde kids are. Eilish McHugh-Smith and Matt Robb returned from the Blue Light camp at Lake Tekapo last weekend with the big ‘thumbs up’ from the organiser, Jacqui Lambeth on their positive attitude and willingness to take on a challenge. Well done guys! Look for their camp reports in this newsletter.
The school has received a number of information packages for our parents on the draft National Standards in Writing, Reading and Maths which are due to be implemented in 2010. Included in the pack is a response form to make a written submission on the standards before they are finalised. You are invited to pick up a copy at the school office.
Our Year 3/4 Rippa team which was runner up in the Central Otago Rippa Tournament in March has been invited to play at Carisbrook before the Otago vs Southland N.P.C. game on Friday 7th August. Early next term we will need to get the team together for some practices and to make arrangements for them to be at Carisbrook at 3pm on the 7th.
Regards,
Doug White

Clyde Green bye
Clyde Green Netball (year 5-6)
Alexandra Red proved to be tough competition but the girls played very well and managed to slip past them 6-5. It was a hard match and it was great to see the girls pull together to get there in the end. Danielle Huntington was our player of the match, putting in a great performance at centre. We have a bye this weekend so everyone can have a lie in!
Lori Linney
Clyde Gold:
On Saturday the 13th the girls played Roxburgh Primary A. They had a slow start but enjoyed a great game. Sydney Cook fed well into the circle where Sharna Lines and Renae Corlet worked well together. Ella Galletly had a steady game and was ‘Player of the Day’. The final score was 22-8 to Clyde. Their game last Saturday was an old fashioned thumping at the hands of Terrace Green. They had a great start, and all credit to them – they kept trying throughout. Reane Corlet and Georgia Lloyd were standouts.
Jo Galletly
Clyde White:
Clyde White lost to Cromwell College C on Saturday (not sure of the final score). Player of the day went to Willow Reid for her great defending in the goal circle. Kate Bachop and Eva Williams played an excellent game with some great court work.
Tracey Driehuis
Mini Hockey:
Last Sunday’s tournament in Ranfurly marked the end of the season for our mini hockey players. We fielded just one team and everybody did very well, taking turns on the field and displaying good teamwork and sportsmanship. Thank you to parents and families who have provided steadfast support for our hockey players this season – your commitment is very much appreciated. Could all sticks and shirts, plus outstanding gift money please be forwarded to me by the end of this week.
Thank you.

Year 8 Students
Thank you all very much for supporting our cake stall, raising money for Cure Kids. We managed to raise $140.50 which was fantastic. A huge thank you to our parents, Roger & Sylvie and Deb for helping us, and also to Ms L for her support. We also have made some cards which we have for sale and these will be in the office this week.
Remi Berg and Eva Williams
Blue Light Well Done Kids Camp:
In the weekend, Matt Robb and I were lucky enough to be chosen from Clyde School to attend the Blue Light Well Done Kids Camp at Lake Tekapo. This is one of four camps held each year and run by the Christchurch Blue Light committee. We met 16 other kids from Christchurch and four others from Central Otago. We all stayed at the military camp just out of Tekapo. The days were spent doing various activities such as ice skating, hot pools, Mt John Observatory, Mt Cook walk and a plane ride over the lake. In the evenings, we watched movies before going to bed after a really tiring day. Thank you to Jacqui Lambeth for giving us this wonderful opportunity. I hope that Clyde students get a chance to attend this camp again.

Week 8, Term 2 Tuesday, 16th June, 2009
Dear Parents and Community Members,
I am receiving almost hourly email updates on the H1N1 swine ‘flu with advice on minimizing its spread and, if we have a case at school, how we should deal with it.
At this stage we are doing our best to minimize the spread of any infection at school by having hand sanitizer in each room and reinforcing hand washing and general hygiene routines. We are also reviewing after school cleaning tasks in the light of the advice from the Ministry of Health with our cleaning contractor. It is important that any child that feels unwell is kept at home, particularly if they have returned from an overseas trip. One infected student arriving at school could result in the school being closed for 7 days. Clyde School has a pandemic plan which details how we should deal with an influenza outbreak. Teachers are planning for the possibility of providing learning support for our children in the event of the school having to close. The school’s website is one way we can provide learning support remotely as can online learning like Mathletics. We believe it would be useful to update our parents contact list with your email address. Would you mind taking a moment to email the school office at office@clydeschool.co.nz so we can record your email address on our contact list.
This morning our snow day procedures were activated as a cold front passed through leaving 5 centimetres of snow and icy roads in Alexandra and the eastern areas of our valley. Clyde escaped relatively lightly but a decision was made by Central Motorways to delay buses until sunrise and then to re evaluate road conditions. All Alexandra schools have agreed to coordinate announcements regarding late opening or closure due to road conditions and this morning the decision was made to open all schools at a later time of 10am. This is probably not the last weather event of the winter, so I will clarify our snow day procedures.
If Central Motorways delays or cancels bus runs due to road conditions an announcement will be made on the local radio station More F.M. at 94.3. This morning’s announcement did not make it clear that buses would be an hour later than usual which resulted in some confusion and this issue will be addressed.
Dunstan High School, The Terrace, Alexandra, St Gerard’s and Clyde coordinate school postponement or cancellation decisions and place an announcement over MORE FM. if the schools are to open later or close due to weather and road conditions.
Last week the staff and I attended an excellent presentation by Laughton King a child psychologist with a particular interest in learning disabilities. Laughton himself has some dyslexia so he was able to give us an insight into the difficulties a person who ‘thinks in pictures’ has in a world saturated with language. We came away with a much better insight into kids with specific learning difficulties and some ideas on how we can best help these kids with their unique learning needs.
Well done to our 40 hour famine participants! You have raised over $1200 for World Vision. I now only have six out of thirty nine participants who have still to return their sponsor books. Please return the books as soon as possible, even if the money has not been collected, so the organisers can complete the final audit and I can apply for a prize for those children who have raised over $50.
Organiser Naomi Keenan tells me this Sunday’s mid winter market at the Clyde Hall will be bigger and better than ever with a record number of stalls. Make sure you get along to support your local community organisations.
I am amazed at the skills of some of our senior children on the unicyles. Some are now going for a ride around the block! Room One has the bikes this week. We will have a ride off in the last week of the term and those that have mastered the tricky little beasts will be awarded a special ‘Bikes for Fun’ certificate.
We have entered three teams for the Central Otago schools curling competition on the 3rd of July in Alexandra. I will be selecting 12 Year 7 and 8 curlers to represent the school at this competition.
The result may not have gone the All Blacks way at the rugby in Dunedin last Saturday but it was a great occasion. It was nice to see one of the ball boys for the game, ex Clyde pupil Sam Galletly, standing between the two teams for the national anthem. Quite a memorable moment for Sam I would imagine.
Teachers are presently gathering assessment information and writing mid year summary reports which will be sent home on the 3rd of July. Parents will be given the option of having an interview with their child’s teacher in the second week of next term.

Clyde Mid Winter Markets:
A reminder to Y8 students that your cakes, biscuits and lollies need to be at school by 11am this Friday.
Mini Hockey:
Last weekend our two mini hockey teams played in Cromwell. The faster pace of the turf made for some good open and quick moving games. It was very encouraging to see our children beginning to follow the ball up the field and have some belief in their own capabilities. While a win still eludes us, it was very rewarding to see the close games that the Blue team, in particular, were achieving. This Friday afternoon, we are very fortunate to be having a coaching clinic with Rachel Petrie from Sport Central. The session will be focusing on basic skills and activities for junior players and will be hugely beneficial for players and parents alike.

Eighty Years Ago: The children of Clyde School pose for a photo in 1929 outside the original stone school which was demolished in the 1960's.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Influenza A has not gone away! There have been a number of confirmed cases in Australia and a recent outbreak in Auckland has forced the closures of some schools and day care centres. Clyde School has a pandemic plan that emphasizes, in the first instance, good personal hygiene, particularly hand washing, and parents keeping children home if they are sick with ‘flu symptoms. I have attached a quick reference table which details the different symptoms of influenza and a cold. Anyone who has ‘flu symptoms must stay away from school to avoid infecting others. We will be directed by health authorities as to the appropriate course of action if we have an influenza outbreak in our area.
This afternoon Clyde’s staff will be attending a seminar on Dyslexia at Alexandra Primary School. The seminar, presented by Laughton King, an educational psychologist who has dyslexia himself, will look at possible reasons why a child has difficulty with their learning. Parents are invited to the evening session from 7 to 9pm at Alexandra Primary School. I apologise for the short notice as this meeting was only arranged late last week.
You will notice that some of our pupils have yellow school council badges. These councillors are appointed by their classmates to represent their room at our fortnightly school council meetings. I enjoy the opportunity to regularly meet with council members to discuss any problems or any suggestions for improving our school. They are a really articulate and thoughtful bunch! The council gives our children a voice on the running of their school and gives council members an insight into formal meeting procedures.
Congratulations to the following Clyde Pupils who have recently made their presence felt at regional competitions with some great performances – Sydney Cook was the overall age group winner for girls 10 years and under at the Neptune Queens Birthday meet at Moana Pool in Dunedin, collecting 6 firsts and 2 seconds in her events. Annalise Cook competed in the two events in the girls 8 years and under section and won them both! Great stuff. A number of our boys have also been selected for Central Otago rugby teams – see Wasa’s rugby update in this newsletter. Well done to you all.
Reading Recovery is a very effective early intervention programme which catches children, after their first year at school, who are at risk of slipping behind with their reading. The programme provides intensive one to one support for a child for half an hour a day. We get a lot of satisfaction when we see these children who have been given this ‘hand up’ progressing with their peers in important literacy skills. Our Reading Recovery teacher, Rose Jefcoate, left us on Friday to take up a position at Living Options and Hannah Alabaster has taken over this important job. Thank you Rose for the commitment to making a difference for our children and best wishes for your new job. Hannah Alabaster is an Alexandra girl and a trained Reading Recovery teacher who has returned to Central Otago after teaching at Tologa Bay on the East Cape of the North Island. Hannah will work with four Clyde children and one pupil from Omakau each day. Welcome to Clyde School Hannah.
Snow and Ice Sports progammes will begin next term. Our Year 7 and 8 pupils were given a note to take home on Monday with initial details regarding our Senior Snow camp in the first week of August. For the first two weeks of next term classes will have ice skating at Ice In Line in Alexandra. Hopefully the cold start we have had to the winter will give us some nice snow and ice conditions for these winter sports programmes.

The team scored a big 28 nil win over Terrace Black on Saturday. Tiffany Eade and Maggie Hislop were a great shooting team with 14 goals each. The solid defence made sure that the ball stayed in our end most of the match. The team really pulled together and helped each other out. Player of the Day was Grace Bruce whose sticky fingers grabbed a massive 11 intercepts!!
Lori Linney
Clyde White:
What a great game on Saturday. At ¾ time it was 13 all – and at full time the final score was 19-16 to Poolburn. Player of the Day went to India Reid who showed great shooting skills while playing GS and made some valuable intercepts while playing Centre. Great play by Eva Williams with her never ending valuable contribution. Eva is always fast and hungry for the ball. Katie Knowles also played an outstanding game at Goal Keep with many great intercepts as did Julia Driehuis at GD. Well done also to McCauley McMillan-Valster, Willow Reid, Tansy Mogensen, Kate Bachop and Aleysha Hemsley for their great effort in this game. Many thanks also to our supporters for coming along on Saturday and encouraging the Clyde netball girls. The girls really appreciate it. Remember last week for the New World dockets.
Thanks.
Tracey Driehuis
Clyde Gold:
An interesting tussle against Cromwell College B saw some moments of brilliance and some not so on Saturday. Sharna Lines and Renae Corlet were standout players of the day for their awesome moves, slick passing and rebounds in the goal circle to bring a comfortable 22-8 win. Great pressure from Chantal Driehuis in mid court enhanced Sophie Wright’s game at goal keep of which Sophie gained some valuable intercepts. Well done girls.

Week 6, Term 2 Tuesday, 2nd June, 2009
Duck Dinner: Megan O’Brien, her daughter Delicia and chef extraordinaire, ex Clyde School Deputy Principal Jim Barrie, serving up duck dinner last week. Duck dinner is a long standing May tradition at Clyde School.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Two Clyde School teams were placed second out of over forty teams at last week’s Central Otago Spelling Quiz. Our Year 5/6 team of Julia Driehuis, Anna McDonald and Katie Knowles were always in contention and were finally only two points behind the eventual winners, Goldfields. Our Year 8 team of MacCauley Harris, Georgia Lloyd and Sophie Wright were also just pipped for first by an Alexandra team. All six school teams performed with real credit. Thank you to the parents and teachers who supported and prepared the teams for the quiz.
This months Otago Problem Solving Competition had some very curly problems however Year 7 pupil, Matt Ross still managed to score 80% and gain the school’s top result. Well done Matt.
At our Teacher Only Day last Friday staff had a very productive day working on school curriculum and having a training session with our new Activboards. We also spent some time working on the construction of our new website www.clydeschool.co.nz which Alistair and Barb are presently giving a makeover. The school’s weekly newsletter can now be accessed from this site.
Some of our senior children arrived along to school last week with non standard uniform such as grey pants, hoodies and multicoloured thermals. It wasn’t a good look! We have reminded them that we have a uniform code of conduct which states the prescribed uniform must be worn or a note brought to school explaining why it is not being worn. We expect these children to be good models of presentation for our school. Children not complying with the code will be given some school service tasks.
Marg Ross, our school chaplain lost her mum, Jean Duff, last week. Jean was a very special member of Marg’s close family and will be missed. The Clyde School family would like to extend our sympathies to Jean’s family and friends.
Finally, I have had some wonderful news this week regarding funding for our planned multipurpose room. The Central Lakes Trust has generously granted us $100,000 to provide kitchen and toilet facilities to enable the building to be used by community groups out of school hours. We have also been advised by the Ministry of Education that we have additional funding to include a teaching space in the building due to our growing roll. We hope to get the building under way in the spring.
Regards,
Doug White

Week 5, Term 2 Tuesday, 26th May, 2009
Finish in sight: Patrick Williams, Nicole Shields and Indiana Williams finishing the team mountain bike race at last weeks Top Bike competition in Alexandra. Patrick, Nicole and Indiana, along with their team members Anna McDonald, Tain Laing and Midge van Boxtel were placed second overall and have qualified for the Otago/Southland Top Bike finals in term 4.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Congratulations to the forty Clyde pupils who participated in last weeks 40 Hour Famine. I was delighted with this commitment by our senior school pupils to do something significant to improve the quality of life for children in countries such as Cambodia, East Timor, Bangladesh, India and Rwanda. Please return the sponsor booklets and money to the office at your earliest convenience so that the money can be forwarded to World Vision. Special thanks to Barb who supervised the Famine sleepover at school on Friday night at the end of a busy week.
Last Friday’s mufti day donations totalled $146 for the Westpac Helicopter Trust. Two of Clyde’s pupils have had first hand experience with the rescue helicopter so we all appreciate having this great service on call if we should need it.
Clyde School was represented with six teams at last Wednesday’s Central Otago Top Bike. Thank you to the parent supporters who assisted with the logistics of getting thirty riders and their bikes to the venue. Our riders performed with real credit despite the chilly temperatures. I will circulate the full list of results when we receive them from Cycling Southland.
John Potts from Bikes for Fun was delighted to hear about the number of our senior pupils who are up and going on the unicycles. He suggested that raising the seat to belly button height once a rider has got themselves to the stage of riding a few metres to take out the wobble. Good luck to Room 2 who now have the bikes to ride at school and take home if they wish.
This Thursday six Clyde teams will represent us at the Central Otago O.D.T. Spelling Quiz in Cromwell. Our two Year 5/6 teams will be competing from 4.30pm to 6pm at the Cromwell College auditorium and the four Year 7/8 teams between 6.30pm and 8pm. Spelling team members will be given details of transport arrangements and the quiz organisation by their class teacher.
On Thursday our senior classes will be participating in this month’s Otago Maths Problem Solving Challenge and three students are participating in the ICAS Computer Skills Competition on Wednesday.
We have a handful of unpaid school accounts, some of which now date back to school activities at the beginning of term one. Could you please prioritise the payment of these accounts if you are one of our long term debtors. As you probably appreciate, the job of keeping a school in the black is an ongoing challenge so your urgent attention to these accounts would be really appreciated.
In 2010 the Government will be implementing national standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics in schools for our Year 1 to 8 children. At the same time a ‘plain language’ reporting format will be introduced for parents detailing their child’s achievement and progress with reference to these standards. Parents are being consulted on what they see as the best format for this reporting. You are invited to either complete a parent feedback form online www.minedu.govt.nz/nationalstandards or request a hard copy from the school office and freepost it to the Ministry of Education.
On Friday the school will be not open for instruction as we have a teacher only day to work on the new curriculum in the morning and have training with the new Activboards in the afternoon. On Monday the school will be closed for the Queens Birthday holiday.
Enjoy the mid term break with your families.
Regards,
Doug White

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Mini Hockey:
Clyde School fielded two teams for last weekend’s tournament in Omakau. Although a goal still eludes us, there was a huge improvement in attacking drives and defensive positioning. It was great to see the new players for the season getting involved in the game – Kia Kaha.
A special thanks to the Clyde Tennis Club for allowing us to practice at the courts – what a difference!!
Paula Penno
Netball:
No netball this weekend because of Queens Birthday.
To date Clyde White and Clyde Green have registered for the New World sponsorship promotion and the teams are collecting New World dockets. Team boxes for dockets are in the office – any dockets would be gratefully received.
Clyde White:
Clyde White narrowly defeated Alexandra White 11-10 on Saturday. Player of the day went Katie Knowles for her great defending and excellent netball skills. Eva Williams and Julia Driehuis both got some great intercepts. Good defending in the goal circle by Tansy Mogensen. A great team effort. Thanks to all the parents for their support on the day.
Many thanks also to all the parents who gave up their time to do canteen duty.
Tracey Driehuis
Clyde Green:
On Saturday, Clyde Green worked very well together to beat Cromwell Black 12-2. Player of the Day was Keetra Lloyd. All the girls played really well. Keep up the good work.
Clowie Lloyd
Headlice:
Unfortunately we seem to have a number of children with headlice at present. It only takes one untreated head for the outbreak to continue for months and for this reason it is important that, as a precaution, ALL families understand the life cycle of this irritating pest and check children’s scalps for signs. You cannot rely on your child itching and scratching, you have to look carefully to find out. Sit your child beside a window or in direct light because head lice are small and hard to see. The eggs, sometimes called nits, are smaller than a pinhead and may be greyish white or brown in colour. They are stuck on to the hair shaft within about 5mm of the scalp. Any eggs that you see further than 15mm from the scalp are likely to be dead or have hatched.
Apply conditioner (preferably white) to the hair and use a very fine-toothed metal comb (available from chemists) on alternate days for a minimum period of three weeks. Wipe the comb on a white tissue to check for headlice. Shampoo treatments containing chemicals are also available, although headlice seem to be becoming resistant to some of these and the effectiveness of herbal remedies is not clearly established.
We ask that you keep your child/ren at home until they have been treated. Please ring the school office if you would like a copy of the information sheet supplied by our Public Health Nurse.
Community Software Plan:
Clyde School is participating in the BRAINtastic! Reading Success Community Software Plan (CSP). BRAINtastic! Reading Success uses an integrated Phonemic- and Text-based approach to reading, with full sound support, and will help every child, be they a Beginning Reader, Emerging Reader, Struggling Reader or Power Reader, to be the very best reader they can be! Accompanying this newsletter is an information leaflet profiling the award-winning EdAlive range. Please consider investing in one or more of these products. The home computer is a powerful educational tool and with these EdAlive titles your children can learn while they play. EdAlive titles are directly correlated with the curriculum. Our school will receive “$ for $” in EdAlive Discount Vouchers for every title ordered. Please return orders to the school by Friday the 5th June. Demo versions of the EdAlive products can be downloaded from www.edalive.com

Week 4, Term 2 Tuesday, 19th May, 2009
The Clutha-Matau River in flood at the Clyde Bridge on 17th November 1999.
The mighty Clutha at our back door occasionally reminds us that it is New Zealand’s most powerful river. This week’s 1600 cumec flow pales in comparison to the over 3000 cumec flow in this photo back in 1999. Many of our families have had a look at the dam’s spectacular spilling over the last few days and have had to avoid the river track which is presently under water.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Eight top writers of picture books, novels, film scripts, school journals and newspapers inspired and lead workshops for our Year 6 and Year 8 pupils in Cromwell last Friday. Clyde pupils joined children from five Central Otago schools at a writers camp which we hope has opened their eyes to the many avenues open to those who like to write for pleasure or a living.
Last Saturday, Molyneux Park was abuzz with hundreds of young sportspeople from all over Central for the 7 aside tournament. I managed to catch up with the action at most netball and rugby games. Clyde kids were obviously giving it their all, were showing great sportsmanship, and were working together as a team. Special congratulations to Clyde’s under 10 rugby team who I was lucky enough to see win their final in a very convincing manner. Clyde’s parents and teachers do a great job turning up each Saturday to support these young sportspeople. I have had my ear to the wall and heard of some Clyde children who are not giving their coaches their full cooperation at practices. We would appreciate families supporting our strong school line that these parent volunteers are doing a great job and must be given total respect and cooperation at all times by Clyde school pupils. I am happy to follow up on any issues our coaches may have with this matter.
This week we have a number of cultural events, following on from last weeks great visit by a group from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. On Wednesday Bob Bickerton returns for a show which features music from our past. Bob will be performing at the rugby clubrooms. Our PTA will be paying for our children’s entry to Bob’s show. On Thursday The Tasman Quartet, which features Alistair Banks sister Jenny, will play in the rugby clubrooms at 9.30am. Jenny has been based at Boulder, Colorado in the U.S.A. and we are lucky enough to have her perform for us while she is touring in our area. We ask that there is a gold coin donation per family for this performance. The quartet will also be performing in Alexandra on Sunday the 24th May at 3.00pm at the Community Centre. On Thursday afternoon our Year 5 to 8 pupils will be joining other schools for a performance of the Magic Flute opera at the Alexandra Memorial Theatre. A bus will pick up our children at 1.10pm and will return to school by 3pm. Sophie and Sharna will travel in with me earlier as they have been invited to take part in the performance. The bus fare and entry cost for the performance is $4 per child. REAP, through the Arts Council, has assisted with our children’s entry cost.
While on the subject of the performing arts, well done Sophie Wright for placing first in two categories at the Green Island Singing Competitions held recently in Dunedin.
TopBike will be held this Wednesday at Molyneux Park in Alexandra. All team members should have taken home a notice detailing the event organisation. We will need to leave school at 8.45am and should be back in Clyde by 3pm. I will gratefully accept the offer of parents who can take a trailer as we have over 30 bikes to get to Alexandra. Riders should wear their school uniform and take warm clothing to wear between events. If the weather is unsuitable a postponement announcement will be put on More FM. The postponement date is Thursday.
I have had 18 pupils register for this Saturday’s 40 Hour Famine following the visit of Alice from World Vision last Friday. It’s great to see such a large group of children keen to make a difference for children less fortunate than themselves.
This Friday we are having a mufti day to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Children who wear mufti on the day are asked to bring along a gold or silver coin to put towards this wonderful service. Our school community was very grateful to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew recently after Fletcher Sharman suffered a heavy fall at the Bike Park during one of our EOTC activities and was taken to Dunedin Hospital.
We are presently in the process of overhauling our school website. Barb and Alistair would be interested in any ideas about things you would see as useful additions to the site.
A reminder that on Friday the 29th of May we will be having a Teacher Only Day to work on the revised New Zealand Curriculum and to have training session with our new interactive whiteboards.
The next HPV visit for our Year 8 girls by our HealthCare Otago team will be next Monday.
Regards,
Doug White

Clyde Gold:
The Alexandra tournament on Saturday saw Clyde Gold win their first four games only to be knocked out in the quarter final 7-3. Sharna and Georgia combined well in the shooters circle in all games. Ella had good performances at wing attack and centre and Brittini was dangerous at centre and goal defense. Renae showed her versatility playing three positions well. Overall player of the tournament went to Georgia Lloyd for her awesome attacking and defensive skills throughout the court in all games. Well done girls – a great team effort and great to see lots of parents and teachers support.
Thank you.
